Getting ready for your Group Exercise Class
If you have been invited to join a Group Exercise Class, you may be wondering what to expect. Group Exercise Classes are designed for people with musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. These are problems that affect your muscles, joints, bones or nerves. The classes can help people with a range of conditions, from minor injuries to long-term pain and mobility problems.
The classes are led by clinicians who specialise in supporting people with musculoskeletal conditions. As well as guided exercise, you’ll receive practical advice and support to help you manage your health and wellbeing.
In this short video, we’ll explain what happens during a Group Exercise Class, how to prepare for your first session and what support is available. Our aim is to help you feel confident, comfortable and ready to get the most from your classes.
Before your class
What are Group Exercise Classes?
Group Exercise Classes are supervised exercise sessions for people with musculoskeletal conditions.
The classes are led by experienced clinicians who will guide you through exercises designed to help improve your strength, movement and confidence.
Classes usually last between 45 and 60 minutes and take place once a week.
Your clinician will discuss with you how many classes are right for you. To get the most benefit, it is important to attend as many sessions as possible.
How to get ready
Before your class, please:
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Wear suitable footwear for exercise.
- Bring a bottle of water.
- Bring any medication you may need when exercising, such as an inhaler.
If it is your first class, there’s no need to worry. The team will explain everything and make sure you feel welcome.
During your class
Your clinician will support you throughout the session and make sure the exercises are suitable for your ability and needs.
They will:
- Explain what to expect.
- Help you feel comfortable and confident.
- Make sure exercises are at the right level for you.
- Offer guidance and support throughout the class.
As well as exercise, each session includes advice to support your overall wellbeing.
Topics may include:
- Tips for improving sleep.
- Information to help you understand pain.
- Advice on healthy eating and lifestyle choices.
- Ways to support your long-term health and wellbeing.
You will be encouraged to work at a pace that feels right for you.
After your classes
When you have completed your Group Exercise Classes, you and your clinician will agree on what happens next.
This may include:
- Advice to help you continue managing your symptoms.
- Exercises to continue at home.
- Information about community exercise groups.
- Further support from another part of the service if needed.
- One-to-one appointments if more specialist support would be helpful.
The aim is to help you continue making progress and feel confident staying active.
