Getting ready for your Gym Rehabilitation appointment
If you have a Gym Rehabilitation appointment coming up, you might be wondering what to expect and how to prepare. A Gym Rehabilitation appointment is with a clinician who specialises in physical rehabilitation. The sessions take place in a gym environment and are designed to help you build strength, improve movement and confidence, and support your recovery.
Whether you are new to exercise or already active, the team will work with you at a pace that feels right for you. You will follow a personalised exercise plan with support from a clinician throughout your session.
In this short video, we’ll explain what Gym Rehabilitation is, what happens during your sessions and some simple things you can do to prepare. Our aim is to help you feel comfortable, confident and ready to get the most from your appointment.
Before your appointment
What is Gym Rehabilitation?
Gym Rehabilitation is a service for people who would benefit from supervised exercise as part of their recovery or symptom management.
Your appointments will take place in a gym or similar exercise environment and will be supported by clinicians who specialise in physical rehabilitation.
If it is your first visit, a member of the team will meet you when you arrive and show you around the gym. You will be given a short introduction to the equipment so that you feel safe and comfortable.
Most appointments last between 45 and 60 minutes.
How to get ready
To get the most from your session, please:
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Wear suitable footwear for exercise.
- Bring a water bottle.
- Bring any medication you may need during exercise, such as an inhaler.
If you are feeling nervous about attending a gym, please don’t worry. The team understands that many people may not have used a gym before and will support you throughout your appointment.
During your appointment
During your session, you will follow a personalised exercise plan designed to meet your needs and goals.
You will be able to work through the exercises at your own pace, with a clinician available to support you throughout the session.
The team will:
- Explain what will happen during your appointment.
- Help you feel comfortable and confident.
- Make sure the exercises are suitable for you.
- Adjust activities if needed.
- Monitor your progress and answer any questions.
- Support you throughout your rehabilitation journey.
The focus is on helping you exercise safely while building strength, confidence and independence.
Typically, you can have up to six gym rehabilitation appointments. If you would like to continue after a session, you can contact the team to book your next appointment.
After your appointment
By the end of your Gym Rehabilitation programme, you and your clinician will agree on the next steps.
This may include:
- Advice to help you continue managing your symptoms.
- Exercises to complete at home.
- Information about local or community exercise groups.
- Further one-to-one appointments if needed.
The aim is to help you continue making progress and feel confident managing your health and wellbeing.
