A gastroscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy are procedures that allow a specialist to examine the upper and lower parts of the digestive system using a thin, flexible tube with a camera and light at the end.
A gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach, and upper small bowel through the mouth, while a flexible sigmoidoscopy examines the lower part of the bowel through the bottom. These procedures are used to investigate symptoms such as indigestion, reflux, bleeding, pain, or changes in bowel habits.
During the procedure, small tissue samples (biopsies) may be taken, and any abnormalities can be assessed to support diagnosis and treatment planning.
