Helpful information about the Mid and South Essex Community MSK and Pain Service.
The Community MSK and Pain Service supports adults with muscle, joint, nerve and long‑term pain problems. It helps people with things like improving their movement, managing pain, and getting back to everyday activities.
Cora Health is a national independent healthcare provider providing services on behalf of the NHS. Cora specialises in community-based (out-of-hospital) services, especially musculoskeletal (MSK) services including pain management and some rheumatological conditions.
The service supports a wide range of conditions including back and neck pain, joint problems, arthritis, tendon and muscle injuries, nerve pain, and long‑standing (persistent) pain. It can also support people before or after surgery.
In many areas, you can refer yourself online or by phone without seeing your GP first. GPs and other health professionals can also refer you if needed. A referral may be the best option if your GP needs to share with us some specific information that is relevant to your care, or if self-referral might not be the best option for you for some other reason.
You may be seen by a physiotherapist, advanced MSK practitioner, pain specialist, rheumatology specialist, nurse or other trained clinicians. The service works as a team, so you are matched with the right professional for your needs.
Your referral is reviewed by a clinical team to make sure you’re booked with the right service or clinician. Some people receive advice and self‑management support right away, while others are offered an appointment.
Most appointments are in person. In many cases there may be an option for appointments to be over the phone, video or face‑to‑face. It will depend on what works best for you and the type of care you need.
People with urgent or complex needs are prioritised, and most patients are seen within a few weeks. Waiting times for specific types of care, or for specific times and locations may be longer and will vary according to the level of demand. All waiting times are monitored to ensure timely care.
Treatment may include exercises, physiotherapy, pain education, joint injections, rehabilitation programmes, or advice to help you manage your condition yourself.
Pain management focuses on helping you live better with ongoing pain, even if it cannot be cured. It looks at physical, emotional and lifestyle factors and may include education, movement, psychological support and medication review.

Yes. If you need specialist tests or treatments that can only be provided by hospital services, the Community MSK and Pain Service will usually arrange a referral for you.
For most people, managing an MSK or pain condition includes some level of self‑management. Your clinician will support you to understand what you can do yourself and will discuss this with you as part of your care.
This will be set out in a Care Plan, which is shared with you and your GP.
This service has an ‘opt-in’ approach for most ‘review’ / ‘follow-up’ appointments. This is common of many NHS services. It means that you will be invited to schedule another appointment – if required – after a time period agreed between you and your clinician.
There is no set time limit for how long you can receive support from the Community MSK and Pain Service, and no limit on the number of appointments.
The aim of treatment is to help you reach a point where you no longer need ongoing care – this might be because your symptoms improve, or because you feel confident managing them yourself.
If things are not improving, your clinician will talk with you about whether the service is still likely to help, or whether a different type of support might be more suitable.
If you need support again in the future, you can be referred back to the service.
