Most of our musculoskeletal (MSK) services allow self-referral for NHS patients.
Self-referral means that you can get access to assessment and treatment without seeing a doctor or another health professional first.
If you’d like to self-refer, you’ll first need to check that it is available where you are.

MSK services offer specialist assessment, advice, and treatment for things like joint pain, muscle problems or some nerve conditions.
Self-referral to an MSK service is not appropriate for:
- Anyone under the age of 16 years
- Possible broken bones or infections
- Requests for scans without assessment
- Legal or work-related reports
If you’re unsure, you can discuss what type of service will be best for you with your GP or other healthcare professional before starting a self-referral.
